Du 28 mai au 21 juin 2025, la galerie Daniel Maghen consacre une exposition à un grand nom de l’animation et illustrateur américain Carter Goodrich retraçant plus de 20 ans de carrière.

Brillant créateur de personnages, Carter Goodrich a collaboré avec les plus grands studios d’animation — DreamWorks, Pixar, Illumination — sur des films emblématiques tels que Monstres et Cie, Ratatouille, Coco ou Moi, moche et méchant. Il se distingue aussi comme illustrateur, signant notamment une vingtaine de couvertures du New Yorker.

L’exposition dévoile près de 150 illustrations – dessins à la mine de plomb et aquarelles – explorant le génie créatif et graphique de l’artiste, et son humour décapant.

Elle présente pour la toute première fois une série de portraits issus de ce qui est sans doute son projet personnel le plus ambitieux : un long métrage d’animation engagé contre le port d’armes aux États-Unis sur lequel il travaille depuis 10 ans. Ces dessins incarnent les prémices d’une société américaine fascinée par les armes. Le génie de Carter Goodrich s’exprime dans les attitudes et les morphologies de ses personnages, avec un style à la fois expressif et épuré. Ces portraits saisissants sont rassemblés dans le livre Western! publié pour l'occasion, et préfacé par Bill Watterson le créateur de Calvin et Hobbes.

L’exposition dévoile également de très belles pièces de sa production dans l’animation, fruit de plusieurs décennies de création. Une section entière est consacrée à une galerie de personnages que l’artiste considère comme ses meilleures réalisations, des personnages écartés par les studios mais conservés précieusement dans ses cartons. Ces dessins inédits sont aujourd’hui réunis dans l’exposition et dans le livre Casting Call, témoignant de la diversité et de la singularité de son univers graphique.

Daniel Maghen Gallery is proud to dedicate an exhibition to the legendary figure in the world of animation, the American illustrator Carter Goodrich, which retraces more than 20 years of his career.

A brilliant character designer, Carter Goodrich has collaborated with major animation studios – DreamWorks, Pixar, Illumination – on iconic movies, such as Monsters, Inc., Ratatouille, Coco and Despicable Me. He has also distinguished himself as an illustrator and has notably drawn around 20 several covers for The New Yorker.

The exhibition reveals nearly 150 illustrations – graphite drawings and watercolors – exploring the artist's creative and graphic genius, and his caustic humor.

For the very first time, it includes a series of portraits from what is undoubtedly his most ambitious personal project: a feature-length animated movie advocating against the right to bear arms in the United States, on which he has been working for 10 years. These drawings embody the beginnings of an American society fascinated by weapons. Carter Goodrich's genius is expressed in the attitudes and morphologies of his characters, with a style that is both expressive and refined. These striking portraits have been collected in the book Western! for the occasion, with a preface by Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin and Hobbes.

The exhibition also showcases some of his beautiful animation artwork, the result of decades of creativity. An entire section is dedicated to a gallery of characters the artist considers his finest work, which are characters discarded by studios, but carefully preserved in his portfolio. These unpublished drawings are now brought together in the exhibition and in the book Casting Call, testifying to the diversity and singularity of his graphic universe.
